‘Good on You’ is my favourite fashion online platform. I decided to give up buying from unsustainable fashion brands as a new year resolution this year, which was all well and good until suddenly I was left thinking where on Earth can I shop now? What brands are sustainable? Are any brands sustainable? ‘Good on You’ has since been a lifesaver.

‘Good on You’ pulls together information from thousands of different fashion brands and uses a rating system to show you the impact that that particular brand has on the fashion industry. For example, it rates brands by factoring in the people working for the brand, the brand’s consideration for the planet and the brand’s use of animal products. Each brand is ranked separately on each of these issues and is then given an overall rating that ranges from ‘we avoid’ to ‘great’.
Buying exclusively from sustainable brands has the stereotype of being more expensive from hughstreet, fast-fashion brands. ‘Good on You’, however also gives users of the app an indication of how expensive each brand is and offers similar, alternative brands with a variety of prices for you to look at.
"I can’t express enough how much this app has positively influenced my life"
The app has a fantastic search bar, which anyone would struggle to find a brand that they haven’t assessed in terms of its sustainability. You can also favourite particular brands that you really like, and the app provides you with ways of getting in contact with such brands if you wished to, either to give positive feedback, urge them to do better in being sustainable, or if you had a question.
Perhaps most usefully, the app allows you to search for clothes in categories. This in particular was a worry of mine when I decided to only shop sustainably. After a few weeks of not really thinking about clothes, suddenly it dawned on me: where would I buy underwear? Where would I buy activewear? These were not items of clothing that buying second hand particularly appealed to me. That’s where ‘Good on You’ becomes, I think, really useful. It allows you to look up specific types of clothing and discover new brands that are sustainable that otherwise you might never have heard about.
Aside from all of these features, ‘Good on You’ has a regularly updated news reel where they post about all kinds of issues specifically relating to fashion. These range from ‘The Most Ethical Luxury Jewellery Brands’ to ‘Material Guide: How Ethical is Denim?’. Not only are these interesting reads but they are highly informative too.
Overall, I can’t express enough how much this app has positively influenced my life since downloading it. I recommend it to anyone who like me may be struggling to buy from solely sustainable brands, or anyone looking to start being more conscious about how fashion can negatively effect the environment.
